The Sculpture of Anton Murre
Many of those who knew Anton's work would most likely agree that his sculpture was his most important contribution to the art of Australia. He gained an interest in it while he lived at Mosman during the 1950's shortly after arriving in Australia. The family was blessed to have spent the year 1950 to 1961 on the corner of Musgrave and Raglan Streets, just a short walk from Sirius Cove and the beautiful harbour bush extending from there around to Clifton Gardens.
Sydney sandstone was Anton's first choice and later he added may other media with siltstone from the southern highlands becoming a dominant one in his latter years. He ended his artistic life creating stick sculptures from material he would collect around his residence in Marsfield in Sydney.
Please watch the two videos presented here- they are an attempt to portray Anton's genius as a sculptor.
